3 big stories…

1. Zelensky Middle East Tour.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed defence deals with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Over 200 Ukrainian drone experts are already in the Middle East helping to defend against Iranian drones. More detail in Monday's episode.

2. Attacks continue.

Israel and the US attacked various sites in Iran this week, including IRGC bases, underground ammunition depots, and a major bridge near Tehran. Iran hit Kuwait International Airport, an oil refinery and desalination plant, also in Kuwait, and an Amazon Cloud service centre in Bahrain.

3. Kenyan tea stuck.

8 million kilograms of tea are stuck in Kenya's port of Mombasa, as imports from the Middle East, which normally buys about a quarter of Kenya's tea, have virtually stopped.

… and one you might have missed.

Over 400,000 KitKat chocolate bars were stolen from a truck in Italy that was destined for Poland. Nestle has started a 'KitKat tracker' for people to find out if they are eating a stolen KitKat.

Graph of the week

Hungary's parliamentary election next Sunday has been described as the most important election in Europe in 2026. Opinion polls in Hungary are notoriously biased, with variations of 20 percentage points common depending on the organization. This line graph shows the progression of hundreds of opinion polls going back to 2019. Since 2025 the Tisza party (blue), led by Peter Magyar has been leading the polls, above Fidesz (black) of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

🌍 World news question:

Which Canadian singer - the best-selling French-language artist of all time - has announced ten concerts in Paris for the end of this year, after not performing since 2022 when she was diagnosed with a rare health condition?

Quote of the week:

"The threat of NATO’s break-up, easing sanctions on Russia, a massive energy crisis in Europe, halting aid for Ukraine and blocking the loan for Kyiv by Orbán - it all looks like Putin’s dream plan."

Stephen’s view:

What has been the deadliest event in Iran in 2026? The worst violence?

Probably most people in the world would imagine that it has happened over the last four weeks of war. The United States and Israel have hit thousands of targets in Iran, and we see many photos of the destruction that this has caused. Iran's Health Ministry says that at least 2,076 people have been killed by US-Israeli bombing since 28th February, including 216 children.

I don't want to diminish the pain and suffering caused by anyone's death, especially children. However, if we just look at the cold, hard numbers, the number of people killed (2,076) is much lower than most estimates for how many Iranians were killed at the hands of their own regime in January.

During protests in January, Iranian security forces (the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, the paramilitary Basij militia, and other paramilitary groups) killed thousands, and probably tens of thousands of protesters. The government's own statistics say that they killed over 3,000 'terrorists', and various human rights groups have said that over 30,000 protesters were killed, mostly by being shot.

I don't want to highlight this to justify the actions of the US and Israel in Iran right now. After all, the regime that perpetrated the massacres in January seems to still be mostly intact - despite many of its leaders being assassinated.

I want to highlight this to remind you that it should be possible to hold two thoughts in our heads at the same time; even if you disagree with the US-Israeli bombing of Iran, you can also recognize that the Iranian people deserve better than the tyrannical autocracy that they live under.

I'll try to keep it lighter next week!

Have a great weekend.
Stephen
